Intimate hygiene for men
Why is intimate hygiene important?
The male intimate area is sensitive and prone to the growth of bacteria and fungi. Inadequate or improper hygiene can lead to problems such as inflammation, itching, and infections. Especially under the foreskin, deposits of smegma can form, which can lead to inflammation if not cleaned properly.
Recommendations for daily intimate care
Gentle Cleaning: Use lukewarm water and a mild, pH-neutral, soap- and alcohol-free cleansing lotion without fragrances. Aggressive soaps can irritate the sensitive skin in the intimate area and cause a burning sensation if they enter the urethra. For the penis, it is often sufficient to gently retract the foreskin (if present) and clean with warm water. Of course, you should never use force, as this can cause tiny tears in the foreskin. If it cannot be retracted without pain, a doctor should examine whether there is a foreskin constriction.
Thorough Drying: After cleaning, the intimate area should be gently patted dry with a soft, clean towel. Make sure to thoroughly dry the areas under the foreskin and between the skin folds to avoid a moist environment that can promote the growth of bacteria and fungi.
Skin Care: For dry or sensitive skin, the application of a moisturizing, fragrance-free cream can be beneficial. This helps to keep the skin supple and prevent irritation.
Clothing: Wear underwear made of breathable materials like cotton and avoid tight clothing. This promotes air circulation and reduces the risk of skin irritation.
Shaving in the Intimate Area: If you shave the intimate area, use a sharp, clean razor blade and shaving gel or foam to minimize skin irritation. Shave in the direction of hair growth and rinse the skin with cold water afterward to close the pores.
Special instructions for men with incontinence
For men affected by incontinence, careful intimate hygiene is particularly important to prevent skin irritations and infections. It is recommended to clean the intimate area after each incident with special, pH-neutral cleaning products and then apply a protective barrier cream to protect the skin.
