Semen Analysis (Spermiogram)
What is a spermogram?
A spermiogram is a diagnostic test used to evaluate male fertility. The ejaculate is analyzed for several parameters, including the number, motility, and morphology (shape) of sperm cells. This information helps identify possible causes of infertility, such as a low sperm count, reduced motility, or abnormal sperm forms.
When should a spermiogram be performed?
A spermiogram is recommended if a couple has been unable to conceive after more than a year of regular, unprotected intercourse. Men concerned about their fertility are advised to undergo two semen analyses at intervals of 2–3 months, as results may vary. The test is also carried out after a vasectomy to confirm infertility.
Common reasons for reduced fertility
Testicular inflammation or previous operations
Testicular torsion in childhood
Drug use, particularly cannabis
Testosterone misuse or anabolic steroids
Genetic conditions
Varicocele (varicose veins in the testicles)
What should you consider before the test?
A period of sexual abstinence of at least 3 days and no longer than 6 days is required. The semen sample should be kept warm and delivered to the urology center within 30 minutes of collection. For your convenience, a private, soundproof room is available on site for sample collection.
How is the spermiogram carried out?
At the Urology Center Vienna, semen analysis is performed using advanced laboratory equipment combined with manual evaluation to ensure maximum accuracy and quality. Patients may provide their sample directly on site in a dedicated private room.
